Office Hijinks: Tapey’s Big Day Out

Tapey visits the World's Largest Egg in Washington.

In October of 2015, the office tape dispenser, Tapey, decided that he’d had enough and headed out for a rule-breaking vacation out west.

I’d originally found this idea on Reddit, however, as it turns out, it was actually just a marketing stunt.  Tapey’s adventure, was completely legitimate.

After enjoying his time abroad, he made it safely back to his home on the supply shelf of “Room 9” at Rocket IT, with nobody the wiser — until they saw his album.

Check out the full album of Tapey’s adventures here:

PASS Summit 2015 Roundup — My Third Summit

PASS_2015_200x200Now in my third year, I recently attended PASS Summit in Seattle, Washington.  This was my second visit to Seattle for PASS Summit, with my first Summit experience in Charlotte, NC.  Having experience my “first time in Seattle for Summit” last year, I had a pretty good idea of where things were and what things would be going on and when and for the most part, things followed the previous year’s pattern very closely.

I arrived in Seattle a few days early so I could work some sightseeing in.  While it’s generally not a good idea to try to have a rental car during the conference, in the days leading up to the conference when you want to see a lot of places, it’s the way to go.  I rented a car from the airport and made my way down to Portland for a couple of nights.

I spent my first two days of vacation, Saturday and Sunday doing some geocaching and exploring the Portland area.  The weather was overcast but nice the first day and lots of rain the second day.  I’d really wanted to see Mt. Hood, but unfortunately the weather didn’t cooperate at all.

Counting Down to PASS Summit 2015

pass2015_countdownWe’re a little over a month away from the start of PASS Summit 2015 on October 27th, it’s time for planning to begin.   PASS Summit is an annual conference (usually held in Seattle, WA) of over 5,000 data professionals focusing on all things SQL Server.  Unlike many conferences, this is very much a “for the people, by the people” type of conference where practical knowledge is the focus.

As with any large conference, there is a lot of planning to be done to get the most out of attending.  In additional to all the usual travel and accommodation logistics, there is whether or not to attend any pre-conference sessions, which of the over 200 sessions to plan to attend over the 3 days of the event, and which after hours events to attend.

PASS Summit 2014 Roundup — Second Summit, First in Seattle

PASS Summit 2014 Roundup — Second Summit, First in Seattle

Last year, I attended my first PASS Summit in Charlotte, NC and I was hooked immediately.

This year, Summit returned to its usual home in Seattle, WA, and despite the 2,200 miles from Atlanta, GA to Seattle, WA, I knew I had to go!  I’ve only visited Seattle once previously — and that was for a very brief visit after a grueling hike of the West Coast Trail in Vancouver, CA so I welcomed the opportunity to spend some actual time in the Pacific Northwest to see the sites.  Regardless of the venue, PASS Summit is a very difficult proposition to pass up.

Once again, this year, I took advantage of the early registration for Summit, where the cost to register is almost half of what the final cost can be…yikes.  Early registration is open once again this year, and goes until January 11th, 2015.  I’ll probably take advantage of this as well again this year, once it gets a little closer.

It’s The Final Countdown — to PASS Summit 2014

It’s The Final Countdown to PASS Summit 2014!  And, now that that is stuck in your head, it’s time to get started.  With just a week left until Summit 2014 in Seattle, WA, its crunch time for getting everything planned, researched, registered, gathered, and packed before flying out on Saturday morning to Seattle, WA.

With only 6 days officially left until PASS Summit 2014 begins, it’s crunch time to get things prepared and ready for the event.  In actuality, it’s less for me as I’ll be flying out to Seattle a little early — on Saturday — to experience the area a little bit before the insanity starts.

PASS Summit 2014 Sessions Announced!

PASS Summit 2014 Sessions Announced

Once again this year, the Professional Association for SQL Server (PASS) will be hosting the premier event for SQL Server and Business Intelligence — PASS Summit.

This year the event will be hosted in Seattle, WA from November 4-7.  On Wednesday of this week, the list of pre-conference sessions which will be offered on the 3rd and 4th as well as the list of conference sessions was officially released!

Last year, PASS Summit 2013 in Charlotte, NC was my first opportunity to attend Summit.  I found the experience to be incredibly valuable and when early-bird registration rolled around for this year’s event, it didn’t take much deliberation to decide to make the trek out to Seattle.

While the session schedule for the event has not yet been published, the abstracts for this first big batch of sessions is online and very compelling — lots of great session topics and great speakers in the lineup.  There are no doubt going to be some tough decisions that will need to be made.  I’m seriously contemplating attending a pre-con session this year (as pre-cons at the smaller SQL Saturday events are always great!)

Look forward to more information about the event as the date draws closer.
